Design Challenges: Blank Spaces

So this is my living room:

here it is from a different angle:

And here is the big blank wall that I can't figure out what to do with.

It haunts my nightmares.

Here's the thing-- I spend a fair amount of time watching Teen Mom Criterion Collection films, so I spend a fair amount of time staring at this wall. It feels empty and unfinished and annoying. Here's the other thing-- I believe in patience (hahahahahahahahaha, no I don't) and not spending money JUST for the sake of putting a piece of bric-a-brac in an empty space. All of the things that make your haus your haus don't come from an afternoon at Target or IKEA. So this blank space has stayed blank for the last four months... and it might need to stay blank for four more. But I'm going to paint it instead. I've thought about picture rails or shelves, but the walls in these New England buildings crumble like that guy at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade who "chooses poorly" whenever you try to mount anything more intense than a thumbtack in them. This makes it both obnoxious and risky to hang shelves above expensive electronics. I'm also lazy and we're renting. I don't love the idea of art up there because with the TV it's like "ahhhhh attack of the rectangles!" So I'm trying to find the perfect shade of soft blackish-purplish-brown to paint it. You'll see. It's gonna look awesome.
