October: Thinnest Veils and the Akashic Records
by Zhana Levitsky
Here in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, October is the absolute best month! Apple picking at the farms, watching the foliage change on the mountains outside my windows, pumpkin carving, cider around the fire pit, tending to my ancestral altar, lighting yummy candles and dipping into the Akashic realms— it’s like the cold snap in the air makes regular living more taut and profound. Remembering the past blends with living in the moment in such a visceral way...not to mention, I get to dig out my favorite hats and sweaters out of the closet. All to say, I cherish the autumn in New England.
In witchy circles we often hear mention of how this month is the time when “the veils thin”. But, you might be thinking: WHAT veils, WHY are they thinning? So, let’s dig into it.
The veils are the membranes, or separations, between the world of the spirits and our world. And they are stretched thin because twice a year (at Samhain & at Beltane) our hemisphere is positioned at exactly its most liminal yearly timing, the full flush of autumn and spring. The ancient Celts, for example, understood the solar year as having two opposite seasons, summer and winter. So naturally the seasons of spring and autumn were the in-between seasons, edges between two extremes, neither one nor the other, and therefore, inherently magical. In fact, “Samhain” means summer’s end and this cross-quarter pagan holiday falls at exactly the moment between the start of autumn and the start of winter, so Halloween is mid-autumn, so to speak. Same for May Day, Beltane as mid-spring, six months away. Both holidays positioned across one another on the wheel of the year. Time is cyclical with repeating patterns, “re-turning” us again
and again to these sacred moments. So this time of thinnest veils, the middle place of the middle seasons, is juicy magical timing to commune with the spirit worlds, as it overlaps and melds with our own mundane world.
Autumn is the perfect time for divination and spirit work, I find it’s easier to connect in and go deep as we are in the dark time of the year (the six month period of the year when the nights are longer than days) and we have cultural echoes of ghosts, honor movies, costumes all around us, and just that vibe that’s so special this time of year. We are able to feel the voices of our ancestors more clearly on the wind, and feel their love in our own beating hearts. If you’ve been longing to connect more fully to the messages of your helpers in the spirit realms, there’s no better time than the present moment.
Divination practices are traditionally amped up this month and in my own practice and one on one virtual work with clients, I’m feeling the tender messages really bubbling up to the surface, whether through the modality of the Tarot or through Akashic Records readings. But I want to write a bit about what the Akashic realms are and invite you to do some research and experience it for yourself.
Let’s start with the basics: What are the Akashic Records?
The Akashic Records are a complete and multi-dimensional vibratory history of our soul’s journey throughout its existence. Imagine an energetic library or holographic information stream containing information about all your prior/current/future lives (as well as disincarnate states)! This compendium of spiritual information houses our experiences, emotions, thoughts and interactions since the beginning of time and can provide valuable information about our soul’s purpose, evolution and unique expression.
Linda Howe, the author of the popular book How to Read The Akashic Records
describes the Records this way: "The Akashic Records offer empowerment and
transformation by lending us exactly the wisdom, guidance, and energetic support that we need in this lifetime. For centuries, the Records, the energetic archive of Souls’ past, present, and future possibilities, were the exclusive domain of mystics, saints, and scholars. No longer! The collective consciousness of the human race has been growing, evolving, and maturing. This spiritual independence is marked by individuals who know that they have direct access to their spiritual Source, and who cultivate that sacred relationship.”
Another perspective I’ll include here comes from Edgar Cayce, the famous psychic medium who initially popularized the Records: “The Akashic Records, or ‘The Book of Life,’ can be equated to the Universe’s super-computer system. It is this system that acts as the central storehouse of all information for every individual who has ever lived upon the earth. More than just a reservoir of events, the Akashic Records contain every deed, word, feeling, thought, and intent that has ever occurred at any time in the history of the world. Much more than simply a memory storehouse, however, these Akashic Records are interactive in that they have a tremendous influence upon our everyday lives, our relationships, our feelings and belief systems, and the potential realities we draw toward us ... The Akashic Records contain the entire history of every soul since the dawn of Creation. These records connect each one of us to one another.”
I’m trained in several modalities to gain access to the Akashic Records, including the Pathway Prayer Process from Linda Howe, but I really love the way my teacher Rohini Moradi (of Magic Inclined) reworked the tap-in to omit religious language. I operate in a spiritual, non-religious paradigm and it was liberating for me to open the records without strict “prayer” or amens (not that there’s anything wrong with it, you do you babe, it just wasn’t me the way Linda Howe taught it). I rely on the guidance from the Masters, Teachers and Loved Ones once I’m inside the records of a client, and we work together to answer your most profound questions with the aid of these Guides in spirit form.
There is so much information contained in the Records of any individual, that it would prove too overwhelming to access it all at once, so the information we retrieve during a reading is what’s most pertinent and helpful right now.
What kind of questions can you ask about during a reading?
You can ask questions about releasing blockages to your personal growth, about
healing from wounds of the soul and heart, about personal relationships and about your health and well-being. You can also as the Akashic Records about your purpose or path in life, such as:
What would be helpful for me to know about my current life’s purpose?
How can I move forward in my life at this time?
What’s limiting me from manifesting
greater abundance? Etc.
You can even ask questions about your past lives like:
What role(s) did I play in my recent past lives?
How can I implement gifts that I received in my
past lives?
Did I ever make a past life vow? If so, what kind and can I release it if it isn’t
serving me any longer?
And my favorite: Was I a witch in a past life?
If you’re still reading, then you’re probably pretty interested in this wonderful and deep modality. Do some research around, there are great suggestions on what to ask the Records and that might even kindle the topic for a future article for me to write. I’m always in awe at just how detailed the information that flows in can be, it’s so precious and specific and I’m grateful to hold that space for others.
Happy October, fellow witches— may your spirit connections be resonant and helpful as we collectively spiral towards winter here in the northern hemisphere.
