"There have been many versions of tarot cards throughout the ages, and these days it seems like there is a deck with artwork for every possible niche. While all standard tarot decks contain the same seventy-­eight cards, made up of twenty-­two Major Arcana cards (like Death) and fifty-­six Minor Arcana cards, the art and design of those cards can be drastically different. Perhaps the most recognizable tarot-­ related imagery in the Western world comes from one deck, commonly known as the Rider-­ Waite deck. Rider refers to the publisher, William Ryder and Son, and Waite is Arthur Waite, who commissioned the deck. But who drew the illustrations that have become almost synonymous with the tarot itself, you might ask? Her name is Pamela Coleman Smith, and her story deserves to be told."
